In order to meet a goal in the district’s technology plan, the Meramec Valley R-III School Board last Wednesday approved the purchase of 37 SMART Board kits for the upcoming school year.
The board unanimously approved an expenditure of $109,701.30 to purchase the kits from Kansas City Audio Visual Inc. of Kansas City, Mo.
The majority of the SMART Boards will be installed at Coleman Elementary and Meramec Valley Middle School, with each receiving 11 and 10 respectively.
Superintendent Randy George said normally, the bidding procedures call for items totaling more than $15,000 to be purchased through a sealed bidding process, but an exception can be made when there is only one single source available, as in the case of the SMART Board kits.
There are currently 132 SMART Boards in place throughout the district, with 65 acquired in the 2009-10 school year through federal stimulus money through the Individuals with Disabilities Act. Other building and technology resources funded another 67. However, the current inventory does not allow for equitable access districtwide.
