The Janet Evans Conference of the Gateway Swimming & Diving League held its championship meet July this past Saturday at the Pacific Swimming Pool.

More than 285 swimmers, ages 4 through 18, competed in 78 races. The competition was held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Chairs for the event, representing each of the four teams in the Janet Evans Conference — Pacific, Union, Lake of the Woods and Indian Hills, South County — organized the event.

The Pacific pool was selected for the meet because it is the largest in the Janet Evans Conference and it has wide lanes appropriate for races, according to Angela Virtudazo, president of the Pacific Swim Team and the Janet Evans Conference.

“The Pacific pool really works for a competition this size,” Virtudazo said.

Family members stood on the sidelines and cheered on their young swimmers.

“Kick, Ashley,” one mother yelled.

“Reach out there, Anna,” one father leaned over the edge of the pool and shouted.

Families set up tents for shade in the area around the pool both inside the fence and outside. Others set lawn chairs and blankets under trees near the entrance to the park.

Cars filled the swimming pool lot and lined the street all the way around the circle.

The Gateway Swimming & Diving League is composed of 37 teams and organized into conferences.

“Everybody is having their conference championship today,” Virtudazo said. “There are swim meets all over the place.”
