The Meramec Valley R-III School District will continue its arrangement with Edison Learning, Inc., to provide summer school classes for elementary students.
The firm will offer a four-week summer school program in 2014.
The district will enter into a multi-year agreement for Edison Learning to provide summer school for students in kindergarten through ninth grade.
The school board approved the agreement at its Dec. 18 meeting, following the recommendation of Superintendent Randy George.
The agreement is to provide programming for three summers — 2014, 2015 and 2016.
“Russell Ford, our representative for Edison Learning, indicated that we’ll receive a 5 percent discount with a three-year agreement,” George said. “That’s a $20,000 reduction.”
George said the history of the program has been positive for district students and parents.
“Last year was a very good year for us,” he said. “The parents enjoyed it. The 24-day program cuts into the summer vacation of teachers, but we need to do what benefits our kids and the financial status of the district.”
