Cleta Null, organizer of the Adopt-A-Family program, said a final tally shows that community generosity enabled her to provide assistance to 581 families, which included 2,400 children and 125 senior citizens and nursing home patients for Christmas 2013.
“It was a record year of assistance,” Null said. “It’s an absolutely wonderful testament to the community’s generosity.”
In addition to food, clothing and toys for area families, diapers, car seats and strollers for Pregnancy Assistance, baby clothes for Newborns in Need and undergarments for troops in Afghanistan were donated.
With the help of Rodger Collins, the program donated approximately 300 bicycles, one for each child who asked for one on his or her wish list.
Null noted that Adopt-A-Family wants to recognize the retailer Walmart, which supplies a large number of items.
She also wishes she could share with the community that donates so much, the numerous written thank-you notes that she received from those who have benefited.
And, as the line in a song from Chicago goes, Null says, she simply cannot do it alone. Debbie Kelley and Brenda McDaniel work closely with Null year after year to organize applications, assemble and sort donated items, and fill individualized baskets for each family.
“I am honored that God has chosen to use me and I hope to serve as long as the Lord allows,” Null said. “Rest assured, I still have a few good years in me.”
