Filing for two open Washington School Board seats will open next month.
Filing for the April election opens Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 8 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018.
The terms of Kevin Blackburn, current board president, and John Freitag, vice president, will be up in April.
Blackburn is completing his second three-year term. He was first elected in 2012.
Freitag was elected to his first term in 2015.
Neither have announced if they plan to seek another term.
Last year, a total of six candiates ran for three open seats.
The board member qualifications are set by state statute, and there is a slight change this year. Previously, candidates could not have been found guilty of nor pled guilty to a felony or misdemeanor. Misdemeanor has been removed.
Candidates should register in Julie Bell’s office on the second floor of the district administration building at 220 Locust St. in Washington.
Regular filing hours following the opening day will be on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The district office will be closed for winter break from the close of business Friday, Dec. 22, through Monday, Jan. 1. Offices will reopen at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2.
The district also will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Board member qualifications are as follows:
All candidates must be at least 24 years of age, a U.S. citizen and resident taxpayer of the district, and have resided in Missouri for one year preceding their election.
Candidates cannot be delinquent in the payment of any state income taxes, personal property taxes, municipal taxes or real property taxes on stated residence.
They also cannot be a registered sex offender, or found guilty or pled guilty to a felony under federal laws or Missouri law.
Candidates must file all required campaign disclosure reports with the Missouri Ethics Commission, when applicable, for all previous elections in which they were candidates.
The seven-member board of education serves as the governing body for the school district.
The school board sets district policies, selects the superintendent, adopts the annual budget and determines the tax rate.
The school board always holds a reorganization meeting in April. New school board members are sworn in at that time for their new terms.
