Washington West Elementary School closed Thursday after a teacher at the school received a threatening email.
Washington Police said it was working with the school district to try and track down the sender of the email. Washington Police Detective Sgt. Steve Sitzes said the email was not directed at the school, but at a single teacher.
Sitzes said the email came to the teacher's school district email. He said police and the district's IT department are attempting to locate an IP address for the sender.
District officials announced the school would be closed Thursday morning before classes began.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Brendan Mahon said the school was closed due to the time of day that the email was sent.
He explained that the one-sentence email was time stamped between 7:30-8 p.m. Wednesday. The school was closed to give investigators time to determine the legitimacy of the threat.
Police are monitoring the situation and doing extra patrols in the area.
