A Villa Ridge man who allegedly fired a shotgun at two people in a moving vehicle — and striking both — was charged Tuesday.
Lucas L. Rankins, 39, is charged in a Franklin County felony complaint with unlawful use of a weapon. He is being held in the Franklin County Jail on a $30,000 cash-only bond.
The charge stems from an incident Monday, May 21, at 11:10 p.m. when deputies responded to South Drive, Villa Ridge, for a report of two gunshot victims, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.
Rankins said he shot at the vehicle because he thought it was being driven by another person who has been allegedly threatening him and his family.
A man and woman were located by deputies with nonlife threatening gunshot wounds. They were lying on the ground outside the vehicle.
The male gunshot victim said he was driving on South Drive when he saw a dog in his yard. He then left the road to try and run over the dog because the animal had attacked his dog earlier, authorities said.
Rankins was arrested at the scene.
The victims were transported by ambulance to an area hospital.
