Franklin County deputies are questioning people about a shooting that happened early Tuesday morning northwest of Sullivan.
A Lonedell teen is recovering from a gunshot wound in the incident that was reported about 1:09 a.m.
The 19-year-old man was with two other men, ages 18 and 20, who were vandalizing mailboxes along Highway H, west of Highway 185, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The men, from the Lonedell and St. Clair areas, said they started out going through trash containers looking for scrap metal but then began damaging mailboxes.
After damaging several mailboxes on Highway H, they turned around and were heading back toward Sullivan when the victim, who was riding in the truck bed, said he heard what sounded like a firecracker, then felt pain in his elbow and noticed that he had been shot.
The men then drove the victim to Mercy Hospital Washingrton where an X-ray showed a bullet lodged in his arm near the area of the wound.
Doctors planned to remove the bullet sometime later Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said.
Detectives were canvassing homes in the general area where the shooting occurred in an effort to determine who fired the shot.
The names of the victim and other men were not released by the sheriff’s office.
