Local police recovered a stolen truck before the owner even knew it was missing.
Charges are pending against a man police say stole a truck from the 200 block of Rand Street in Washington. Franklin County Sheriff’s Department deputies located the vehicle abandoned in the Berger area.
Working with Washington police, deputies tracked down the owner of the truck. The owner said the truck had been parked in front of his home and he didn’t realize it was missing.
The owner said the keys were left inside the truck, but no one had permission to use his truck.
Franklin County deputies were in the area investigating a domestic incident. The deputies identified the man who had abandoned the truck. He was located and taken into custody in Washington.
Police interviewed the man and he told officers he had permission to take the truck.
Washington police applied for charges for stealing a motor vehicle. The man is being held on a probation and parole violation.
Washington police Detective Betsey Schulze said the incident is a good reminder for people to lock their vehicle doors and to not leave keys inside.
