A motorcyclist was injured Wednesday morning attempting to flee from Washington police.
The man was flown by helicopter to Mercy Hospital St. Louis with serious injuries after crashing at the Eighth and Stafford streets intersection.
According to police, an officer attempted to stop a man on a 1994 Suzuki Katana GSX 750 for a traffic violation on Eighth Street just west of Jefferson Street at 11:08 a.m. Police said the motorcycle driver accelerated at a high rate of speed continuing west on Eighth Street.
The officer immediately turned off his emergency lights and did not attempt to pursue the motorcycle. A few minutes later, the motorcyclist was involved in a crash with a 2016 Ford Transit Connect van.
Police said the initial investigation shows that the motorcycle driver failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the van in the intersection of Eighth and Stafford streets.
The driver of the motorcycle was ejected from the motorcycle.
The driver of the van sustained minor injuries and declined transport by EMS.
