One hundred mini American flags were removed from the gravesites of veterans at Brush Creek Cemetery, Gray Summit, over the Memorial Day weekend.
Labadie American Legion Post 565 members placed the flags Friday, May 25, and upon returning to retrieve the flags, found they had all been taken.
Post 565 member Lloyd Harfst said he and the Labadie American Legion are requesting whoever took the flags return them immediately.
Harfst said taking the flags was stripping veterans of the honors they deserve for serving in the military.
“These are veterans who served their time and they deserve to have those flags at their graves,” Harfst said.
This is the second year the post has placed flags at Brush Creek Cemetery. This year they placed 100 flags on veterans graves. For the past 15 years, Post 565 has placed flags on graves at St. John the Baptist-Gildehaus’s cemetery.
He said anyone with information on the flags’ whereabouts, or who is looking to return them can contact him at 636-742-2071.
