A Marthasville man was arrested Saturday, Jan. 6, and charged with new felonies while hiding from authorities in Franklin County.

John W. Edwards Jr., 35, was charged Monday in Franklin County Associate Circuit Court with unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and a misdemeanor charge of possession of an illegal weapon.

According to the probable cause statement filed by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, deputies learned that Edwards was hiding at a home in the 1600 block of Rocky Ridge Road, south of Robertsville.

Edwards was wanted on an outstanding warrant out of Lincoln County on the charge of first-degree statutory sodomy.

Authorities said Edwards is a convicted felon who does not have a permanent address. It is alleged that he was staying with a female friend in Franklin County to avoid arrest in Lincoln County.

When deputies arrived at the Rocky Ridge Road residence, the female left the home and confirmed that Edwards had barricaded himself in the home.

The Franklin County SWAT team found Edwards inside the home hiding in a closet under clothing and personal items. He was holding a 9 mm firearm.

According to the probable cause statement, Edwards threatened to kill deputies and himself. The SWAT team deployed a Taser which caused Edwards to lose control of the gun.

Authorities said Edwards fought with deputies while trying to retrieve the firearm.

Following his arrest, deputies located methamphetamine and brass knuckles concealed in his pants pockets.

He was charged in 2015 with statutory sodomy involving a 4-year-old girl. The alleged incident occurred at a home in Hawk Point which Edwards was visiting.
