Washington police are searching for a man who threatened a clerk with a large knife and escaped with cash Saturday night after robbing the Fischer Phillips 66 Station at Fifth and Elm streets.

The man, who had his face covered with a bandana and was wearing plastic duct taped over his hands, entered the story shortly after 9 p.m. and demanded cash from a clerk behind the checkout counter.

When the clerk hesitated, the suspect came around the counter and began waving the knife at the man who then opened the cash register and handed over money, according to Detective Sgt. Steve Sitzes.

A witness on the parking lot reported seeing the suspect run to the north side of the gas station/convenience store and jump over a chain link fence. He was last seen heading toward Cedar Street, Sitzes said.

The man is a white male in his 20s, about 5’ 7” to 5’ 10” tall and weighing about 180 pounds. He was wearing a well-worn, form fitted, dark blue Cardinals baseball cap, a dark fleece jacket and blue jeans, Sitzes said.
