A 20-year-old Washington man was charged with resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance Monday night, police say.

An undercover officer witnessed the suspect, Joseph Nacy, possibly making a drug transaction, Washington Police Detective Sgt. Brad Erisman said.

Shortly after, police found Nacy walking with another individual on Stafford Street, Erisman said.

Police got permission to check Nacy’s pockets, Erisman said, and found seven suspected tablets of Diazepam.

Diazepam can be used to treat anxiety, muscle spasms and seizures. It can also control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal.

Nacy fled on foot after he found out that he would be arrested. A short foot chase ensued, but he was taken into custody.

A formal warrant charging him with two felonies was issued Tuesday. Erisman said the resisting is a felony because the drug charge is a felony.

The other person with Nacy was not charged with a crime but did have a syringe, Erisman said.
