Washington police said there are no signs of foul play in the death of a 49-year-old man who had been missing since Monday, June 24.

The body of John Harper was found about 11 a.m. Thursday a short time after police had issued a missing person bulletin.

The body was found in some weeds by a detached garage at a home in the 900 block of East Sixth Street, according to police.

Investigators said Harper had been living in Kentucky and was staying with his brother at the Sixth Street home.

The brother found Harper’s body and called police, according to Detective Sgt. Brad Erisman.

Police Chief Ken Hahn said the location where Harper’s body was found had been searched earlier, but nothing was found.

Hahn said the “exhaustive search” included remote areas, trash dumpsters, and attempts to locate the man by tracing his cellphone, all without results. Sometime after the initial search the man’s body was found alongside the garage, he noted.

Family members told police that Harper had been despondent recently, according to Hahn.

The body was transported to the St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office, which will examine it to determine the cause of death, Erisman said.
