The Franklin County Department of Health has renewed its contract with the Missouri Department of Health and Human Services to provide the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program to local residents.

The program provides assistance to pregnant women and new mothers, infants and children up to their 5th birthday based on nutritional risk and income eligibility.

Franklin County is reimbursed by the state to run the WIC program at a cost of $13 per patient, per visit. In fiscal year 2011, the county was reimbursed $240,212 for WIC.

Services include health screenings, nutritional risk assessment, nutritional education and counseling, and referrals to health care providers and community organizations.

WIC also assists mothers with breast feeding education, support and assistance with pumps. Supplemental food is provided at no cost.

Franklin County WIC has an annual case load of 21,230 participants, and its office is located at 15 S. Oak St., Union.

Hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. with two late Thursdays per month, 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

For questions about WIC, call the Franklin County Department of Health at (636) 583-7300 or 1-800-738-9942. Information is also available at www.franklinmo.org under the health department link.
