Felony burglary and stealing charges were issued on two St. Clair men on Wednesday in regard to an incident that occurred the week prior.

St. Clair Police Chief Bill Hammack said the charges were issued on Kevin Williams, 31, and Chad Johnson, 30, for their alleged involvement in taking tools, machinery and other items from a building at 260 N. Main St.

According to the police report, at about 7:50 p.m. on June 14 officers interrupted the men “who were in a business building” at the location. The officers learned that Williams and Johnson had forced open a door to the building and loaded tools and machinery into the bed of a pickup.

The report stated that Williams said he had spoken to the owner of the building and that he was removing all of the machinery and tools out of the business for that individual. Police checked with the owner and learned there never was a conversation with either man regarding the property.

“In fact, the owner of the building told police that he did not even know either one of the suspects,” Hammack said, adding that Williams and Johnson were arrested at the scene.

Upon investigation, officers located and seized more than $34,000 worth of property that was missing from the building. Hammack said the property included a furnace, a bench with mounted vise, 38 spools of wire, automobile engine parts, more than $10,000 worth of aluminum and dozens of tools.

Officers also located a 1990 Izuzu Amigo that was reported missing from the property. Hammack said the vehicle was recovered at Williams’ residence on Peacock Road.

Bond was set at $30,000 cash only on both Williams and Johnson. Additional theft charges for the vehicle are being sought through the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
