UPDATED: A Lonedell man is charged with multiple felony offenses after leading county deputies on a high-speed chase that ended when he rammed a patrol car.

Robert S. Bean, 24, is charged with second-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action, resisting arrest by fleeing creating a substantial risk of serious injury or death, and felony driving while intoxicated.

A $40,000 cash-only bond was ordered in the case.

Earlier Story

The chase started about 2 p.m. Tuesday on Highway O near St. Mary’s Road after a deputy was forced to avoid an oncoming car driving the wrong way.

The deputy turned around and attempted to stop the other vehicle but lost sight of it as the driver sped away.

Other deputies responding to the area saw the vehicle speeding near Woods Road and gave chase but lost sight of it when the driver turned off Highway O onto Robertsville Road.

The driver then turned around and fled east on Highway O and deputies attempted again to stop him near the Route AK intersection south of Robertsville State Park but the man refused to stop.

When officers deployed spike strips, the suspect turned around in a driveway and sped off in the opposite direction, then slowed down to 20 mph and placed his hands out of the window, the sheriff’s office reported.

At that point, a deputy pulled in front of the other car and the suspect accelerated, striking the patrol car  in the left rear and pushing it approximately 200 feet, according to the report.

Deputies then arrested the suspect for driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest and property damage along with multiple traffic offenses.

He was being held in the county jail pending a decision on charges.
