Work on a remodeling project for the Franklin County Health Department is moving forward, officials say.
The project involves remodeling the former county prosecutor’s office on East Main Street for the new health department.
This will give the health department more space and also get the county agency out of a rented building.
It currently rents a building on Oak Street in Downtown Union for $1,600 a month. That building is owned by Herbert and Cora Helling, according to the county assessor’s office.
The county budgeted $500,000 for the project this year, according to County Auditor Tammy Vemmer.
Between construction bids, design services and other costs, the county has committed about $565,000 on the project this year.
This week, county commissioners held a meeting to discuss the computer and phone wiring work that is needed for the project. That will be an additional cost that has not yet been factored in.
The commission received four bids for the work. County Facilities Director Joe Hurt recommended low bidder AQM of Union, which he said can do the work for $9,453.
The commissioners took Hurt’s recommendation under advisement and plan to vote on awarding the phone and computer wiring contract at next week’s commission meeting.
The main contractor on the project is Jasper Development of Union. Second District Commissioner Mike Schatz has said the project should be done by mid-December at the latest.
