The Franklin County Commission on Tuesday recognized retiring Health Department Director Conn Roden for his more than 14 years of service.

Roden said he really enjoyed his time working for the county, adding that he could not have found better people to work with.

“I had no idea when I came here in Jan. 1 of 1999 that I would be here this long,” Roden told the audience at the county commission meeting.

He said there comes a time in everyone’s life when it is time to move on.

Second District County Commissioner Mike Schatz commended Roden on a job well done.

“You brought the health department to where it is today,” Schatz said.

Roden said the health department has seen many changes during his time there. There have been improvements to contractual agreements between the health department and state and federal agencies, he said.

Roden said he believes the health department has a bright future, noting that the agency is looking to move into a new building soon.

The county is currently working on plans to renovate the former county prosecutor’s office into the health department. The new location will provide more space, he said.

“We are bursting at the seams now,” Roden said.

The new health department director is expected to be Angie Hittson, who has been serving as interim director in the time leading up to Roden’s retirement. Presiding County Commissioner John Griesheimer said Hittson will have to be appointed director by the commissioners.

Hittson has worked for the health department for almost six years and was Roden’s administrative assistant prior to taking on the role of interim director.

Griesheimer said Hittson, a registered nurse, has done a “phenomenal” job for the health department, noting that she understands the budget and grant writing.
