Two Washington residents were seriously injured Tuesday in a crash on Interstate 44 in west St. Louis County.

Stanley A. Fleer, 78, and Janice B. Fleer, 72, were taken by Eureka Ambulance to Mercy Hospital St. Louis, Creve Coeur, for examination and treatment following the 5 p.m. crash east of Pacific, the Missouri Highway Patrol reported.

The chain reaction crash happened in the westbound lanes of I-44 when a 2008 Dodge Avenger driven by Zachary A. Wheat, 23, St. Clair, struck the rear of a 2010 Kia Forte driven by Christopher E. Demper, 41, St. Clair, who had stopped for other traffic, according to the preliminary patrol report.

The Fleer vehicle struck the rear of the Demper car, then hit the front of a 2009 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Pavel I. Khalus, 33, Lexington, Ky.

All persons in the crash were wearing safety belts, the patrol said.

The crash happened at the 259.6-mile marker.
