A military unit affiliated with Franklin County will be deployed to Afghanistan in January, an official said this week.

The county commission this week was presented with a flag, proclamation and regimental crest to honor its affiliation with the unit.

“It’s in recognition of the partnership between Franklin County and (the unit)” said Mike Pate, veterans service coordinator whose nephew is a sergeant major with the battalion.

The county affiliated with the 1st Battalion 320th Field Artillery Regiment, Second Combat Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, which is based in Fort Campbell, Ky.

“This unit is going to be deployed to Afghanistan with the last troops that are going to be sent,” said Pate.

There are a lot of people from this area who are part of the unit, Pate added.

There will be a public relations campaign to get the community involved in supporting the unit, he said. Knowing that someone back home cares makes a big difference, Pate said.

“The idea is to get the community involved so when these guys and their families are in the area that they’re made welcome to feel like they are a part of our community also,” Pate said.

State Sen. Brian Nieves, R-Washington, has also given a proclamation in honor of the unit. The proclamation says the state Senate applauds the Franklin County Commission for supporting the unit.

Presiding County Commissioner John Griesheimer remarked that the county commission appreciates what the unit does for the people.

Griesheimer added that he enjoyed the ceremony in September when the unit presented its colors to the county commission when the Vietnam Moving Wall was in Washington.

“I’ve never been prouder to be a citizen of this community,” Pate said.
