A St. Charles County man has been charged with stealing more than $500 worth of merchandise from a Washington store.

Steven A. McCleary, 26, O’Fallon, is charged with one count of felony stealing in the Feb. 9 shoplifting incident at the Wal-Mart SuperCenter. His bond was set at $5,000.

Washington police said a surveillance video photographed McCleary and another man walking out of the store with a cart full of items including a 43-inch flat screen TV, video game systems and other electronics.

Police were able to obtain a license plate number from a vehicle the men were driving and traced it to McCleary’s girlfriend, police said.

Detective Steve Sitzes contacted St. Charles County police who went to a home, arrested the suspect and detained him until Sitzes could respond from Washington, according to reports.

During questioning, the man admitted to shoplifting the items, police said. The TV and some of the other items were recovered but some already had been sold, police reported.

Detectives were looking to question the other suspect in the case.
