The Friends of the Vietnam Veterans are seeking donations for the The Moving Wall memorial that will come to the Washington fairgrounds Sept. 19-23.

The wall stands 6 feet in height at the center and gradually tapers to 4-foot panels at each end.

Each of the two walls that make up one structure is 126.2 feet long, for a total of 252.4 feet. There are 58,228 names on the wall, the same as on the wall in Washington, D.C.

A total of 22 Franklin County Vietnam veterans were killed in the war.

Those who wish to donate may send checks to Friends of the Vietnam Veterans, P.O. Box 1225, Washington, MO 63090, or call 1-800-936-5561.

Viewing

Viewing the wall will be free of charge, said Terry Sullentrup, committee chair, adding that people from all communities are invited and encouraged to attend.

The display will open at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, and will run through 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23. It will be open 24 hours each day.

“Individuals, especially those connected with the Vietnam conflict or war, will have an opportunity to see the replica if they don’t get to Washington, D.C.,” Sullentrup said. “We would love to have school students attend so we can tell them what took place and how we lost so many people during that time.”

Raffle

Sports raffle tickets also are available, with proceeds going toward The Moving Wall display.

Raffled items will include Cardinal’s tickets for the Sept. 6 game against the Pirates; a Nov. 24 St. Louis Rams game with pregame activity tour an autographed football by Chris Long and other memorabilia; and tickets to the St. Louis Blues hockey game (date to be announced) and an autographed puck from T. J. Oshie.

The first place winner will choose their prize, followed by the second place winner.

Tickets are $10 per ticket or $20 for three tickets and can be purchased from Ray Ganz, 314-603-7763, or at Williams Brothers Meat Market, Big Boy’s Grilled Subs & Wings. They will be available for purchase this weekend at Applebee’s and at Schnucks Saturday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
