A vehicle crashed into a tree Saturday in Washington after a 4-year-old got in the driver’s seat and took over the gears, according to police reports.
Sara Scarborough, 25, of Washington, told police that she stopped in the parking lot of the Bieker Creek Apartments and got out of the vehicle with the engine running.
She walked around to the passenger side to get one of the children out of a car seat. There were two female children in car seats in the back seat of the vehicle, according to police reports.
As Scarborough was trying to get one child, who is 1 1/2, out of the car seat, she noticed that the 4-year-old had unlocked herself from her car seat and was in the driver’s seat.
The 4-year-old was manning the gearshift, and then the vehicle started rolling down the hill.
Scarborough tried to stop the rolling car and was getting pulled along with the vehicle until she fell free about halfway down.
The car rolled about 40 feet and hit a tree, police reports say. Scarborough had injuries to her feet and legs, but no other injuries were reported. Police found the car in neutral.
