East Central College may soon require criminal background checks on prospective employees.

The board of trustees discussed a proposal Monday night that would require a background name check with the Missouri State Highway Patrol that will provide misdemeanor or felony criminal history at the county, state and national level, as well as check for sex offenders.

The college would conduct background checks on all new full-time employees before they are employed, and on applicants for part-time employment as the college deems necessary.

Current employees who have been hired prior to the implementation of this procedure also may be subject to a criminal background check based on the position and/or teaching requirements and location.

“We’ve been doing some background checks since 2002, but only at the state and county levels and mainly with people who work (for ECC) in a K-12 district,” ECC President Jon Bauer said.

As a condition of continued employment, the proposed policy states that if a college employee is convicted or otherwise found guilty of any felony, regardless of the imposition of sentence, the employee must contact the human resources department no later than 10 days after the event.

Criminal background check information received by the college will remain confidential.

The board is expected to vote on the policy in October.
