A Franklin County man was treated for a gunshot wound Friday, Dec. 21, after the weapon he was cleaning accidentally discharged, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The victim, a 23-year-old Gerald man, told deputies that while he was dismantling the handgun he pulled the trigger, not suspecting that it was loaded.

The bullet struck him in the left hand, according to the sheriff’s report.

Deputies interviewed the man at Mercy Hospital Washington after receiving a report that doctors were treating a gunshot victim.

The man’s father witnessed the incident, the sheriff’s office said.
