The New Haven Balloon Race will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, at the New Haven City Park.

The event will kick-off with a parade at 1:30 p.m., followed by children’s activities in the park.

The race, presented by the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of New Haven, is free and open to the public.

Refreshments and food are available for purchase.

The balloons begin inflating for launch between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., weather permitting.

The race begins when the lead “hare” balloon takes off ahead of the pack.

More than 20 “hound” balloons then launch in pursuit. The “hound” balloon that drops its bean bag closest to the hare balloon’s landing site will be declared the winner.

The balloon race is co-sponsored by Backes & Toelke Agri Products, Bank of Franklin County, Citizens Bank, Edward Jones of New Haven – Jim Stiles, Hair, Larry Hanks Painting, Peoples Savings Bank, Quick News Now, Quick’s Save-A-Lot, RE/MAX Today, Robller Vineyard Winery and Shear Connection Salon & Spa.

Balloon Glow

New this year will be a Balloon Glow Friday, Sept. 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Balloon Glow offers spectators a view of inflated balloons lighted by their burners.

Visitors will have the opportunity to get up close and walk around the balloons.

Limited concessions will be available.

The Balloon Glow will be held at the New Haven City Park (the site of the race) and will be a walk-through event only.

The Balloon Glow is free and open to the public.

It is co-sponsored by RE/MAX Today.

Park Drive will be closed for both events and spectators are encouraged to park on Lions Drive or in the New Haven High School and Municipal Swimming Pool parking lots.

Both events are weather permitting. No rain date is scheduled.
