Sheriff’s Office to Replace Bulletproof Vests With Grants

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office will soon get new bulletproof vests.

State and federal grant dollars will help purchase the 75-80 new vests.

Bulletproof vests have a lifespan of about five years before the protective fabric starts wearing down, said Cpl. Paul McClure of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Capt. Don Jones said the old ones can still be used in training to get recruits used to wearing a bulletproof vest.

McClure said he hopes the sheriff’s office can have the new vests in a few months, if not sooner.

The grants for the vests have already been approved, he noted.

One grant is for $28,275, and it is from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The county has to match that grant with an equal amount of money.

The other grant is from the Missouri Department of Public Safety, and it is for $8,775. The county has to match that grant with $877.

With all of the grants and county match money, there will be a total of $66,202 available to purchase the new vests.
