A Franklin County man accused of assaulting his wife during an altercation died early Thursday at Mercy Hospital Washington, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office said Raymond Stonum, 49, Villa Ridge, had inflicted severe knife wounds on his arms, severing arteries, after deputies responded to the man’s home in Lee’s Way Mobile Home Park to a report of an assault and tried to talk with him.

After resisting deputies, he was finally subdued and taken by Union Ambulance to Mercy Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and admitted. He died early Thursday morning, apparently from other health-related issues, the sheriff’s office reported.

Investigators said Stonum lived with his daughter in Villa Ridge. Wednesday afternoon, his wife came to the home to visit and there was a physical altercation between her and Stonum and at one point, Stonum got a knife, according to the report.

The daughter attempted to take the knife from him and sustained a minor cut on her hand, the sheriff’s office said. Both she and her mother left the home and called for deputies who responded about 2:19 p.m.

When deputies arrived, Stonum went inside and refused to come out. When he eventually opened the door, deputies noticed that he was bleeding profusely from wounds on both arms. The man then went back inside and refused to come out, prompting deputies to force their way in. They attempted to stop the bleeding until the ambulance arrived and took him to the hospital.

The sheriff’s office said the wife, identified as Mary Jo Presley, 44, also was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the altercation.
