The Franklin County Health Department is planning on being closed from Nov. 27 to Dec. 13 so officials can move into a remodeled facility.
The health department will be open in its new location at 414 E. Main St. in Union Dec. 16.
However, Franklin County Health Department Director Angie Hittson hopes the health department can be open in the new location sooner.
Hittson explained that the state will have to oversee parts of the relocation dealing with vaccines and the computer system. So she said her department is somewhat at the mercy of the state in getting the relocation done in a timely manner.
She encourages people to call the health department to see if it has opened sooner. The number is 636-583-7300.
People who need health department services during the closure should visit health departments in neighboring counties, Hittson said.
The new health department facility is the former county prosecutor’s office, which has been undergoing a remodel for the past several months at a cost of more than $580,000.
Officials said the new facility was needed to give the health department more space.
This will also get the health department into a county-owned building and out of a rented facility on Oak Street, which costs the county $1,600 a month.
The new health department will be about 2,200 square feet larger.
Hittson said she thinks the new building looks great and that it will provide more patient privacy and a better flow to the whole clinic.
She plans for there to be an open house of the new health department after the holidays.
