Plans are still on track for a new roundabout on Prairie Dell Road at the main entrance to East Central College.
Union City officials, along with representatives from Horner and Shifron, a St. Louis engineering firm, met with ECC trustees Monday to provide an update on the proposed roundabout.
The update came the same day Union officials opened the city’s second roundabout at Washington Avenue and Independence Drive.
The city is well into the design phase for the roundabout at ECC, City Administrator Russell Rost said.
According to the plans, during Phase I of the project the entrance to the school will be shifted north slightly to better align it with Denmark Road. In addition to the roundabout at the intersection, Prairie Dell Road also will undergo improvements during this phase from Prairie Dell Plaza to Highway 50, which includes pavement improvements, pedestrian enhancements, curb and gutter work and widening of the road.
The cost to upgrade the stretch of road is estimated at $1,370,000. The project is and 80-20 cost share and the city will provide 20 percent of the funding. The 80 percent comes from funds available though the East-West Gateway Council of Governments’ Surface Transportation Program.
City Engineer Jonathan Zimmermann said the federal grant has been approved for the project and right of way acquisition is expected to take place in the next year starting in the fall.
Construction of the roundabout is slated to begin in the summer of 2015 when traffic at the college is minimal.
A second phase is in the works to widen Prairie Dell Road south to College Road. The scope of the project, estimated at $1.3 million, also will include sidewalks.
