The county commission is now seeking bids for a project to remodel the former county prosecutor’s office for the health department.
Second District County Commissioner Mike Schatz recently said some parts of the project, such as painting the outside of the building and installing an awning, may have to be left out to keep the project within its $500,000 budget.
But if the bids for the project are favorable, those items may be able to stay in, Schatz noted.
This week, the county commission voted to advertise for bids.
Officials say the project is needed because the current health department in downtown Union is short on space.
The new facility will provide an additional 2,200 square feet. It also will get the health department out of rented space and into a county-owned facility.
The monthly rent cost for the current health department building is $1,600.
The former county prosecutor’s office, located on East Main Street in downtown Union, has already been gutted for the project.
The project time line includes the county commission opening the bids at the July 16 county commission meeting.
Before that, there will be a mandatory pre-bid meeting in the second-floor training room of the Franklin County Government Center at 1:30 p.m. July 8.
