A domestic assault report Friday evening led Franklin County deputies to an abandoned home off Highway 185 near Beaufort where they found an operating meth lab.

Four male suspects were arrested in the case.

The investigation began about 6 p.m. when deputies interviewed the domestic assault victim at Mercy Hospital Washington where she was being treated for serious injuries.

After additional investigation, deputies then went to the Beaufort area home shortly before 1:30 a.m. Saturday where they found two men trying to leave the area in a vehicle reported stolen July 31 from St. Clair. The driver surrendered and other man was taken into custody in a wooded area after a brief foot chase.

Deputies then learned that two other men had been inside the home, which had been entered illegally, and found the working meth lab.The two suspects, however, had fled.

It appeared several people had been staying in the vacant home for some time.

The two men arrested, ages 36 and 24, are from the St. Clair area. They were decontaminated by Beaufort firefighters and taken to the county jail.

Police are searching for the other two suspects.
