Villa Ridge Man Dies After Fiery Crash on I-44

A Franklin County man died early Saturday following a fiery crash on Interstate 44 near Pacific. 

The Missouri Highway Patrol reported that James H. Turner, 31, Villa Ridge, was westbound on I-44 when the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse he was driving struck the trailer unit of a 2004 Peterbilt tractor driven by Daniel E. Johannes, 31, of Garner, Iowa. 

Turner's car came to rest in the second westbound lane and caught fire before being struck by a westbound tractor-trailer driven by David L. Luney, 77, Walden, Colorado, according to the preliminary patrol report.

Turner was taken by Meramec Ambulance to St. Clare Health Center where he was pronounced dead shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday. 

Luney and Johannes were not injured, according to the patrol. Both were wearing safety belts.

The patrol report stated that it was unknown if Turner was wearing a safety belt. 

The 5:10 a.m. crash happened on I-44 at the 258.4-mile marker, the patrol said.
