The skate park, which is currently under construction at Optimist Park on East Ninth Street, is about 85 percent complete, according to Darren Dunkle, parks director.

Overall, Dunkle said he is happy with how the project is going.

“We haven’t had that bad of weather, so things have been progressing really well,” he said, noting that there were a few days where it was too cold to do concrete work. “Right now, indications are that they’re going to be done with their project on time or very close to it,” he said.

The contract calls for the skate park to be completed by the end of February, but two change orders may push the date back a few days if needed.

Both change orders, totaling under $3,000, were initiated by the city, Dunkle said. One was a change in the type of rebar being used and the second was to add a drain in the landscape planter.

Dunkle said there haven’t been any significant problems at the park and it remains on budget.

This week, crews added rebar for bowl areas and added concrete to the area. The “bowls” are the biggest portion of the park. Once it’s complete, the park will be touched up and will be substantially complete. An inspection will be held and final punch list items will be completed.

Once the park is completed, a maintenance access gate will be added so city vehicles can enter if needed.

City crews will complete the final work, including adding a trench around the perimeter for proper drainage, as well as patching cracks and sealing or painting the visible tennis court surface not covered by the skate park.

The city’s part of the project will take most of March, Dunkle said, and the park should open in April, with dates to be announced later.

Rules for the park have not yet been finalized.
