Authorities have charged a man accused of assaulting a Franklin County deputy who attempted to remove the keys from the suspect’s car.
Nathaniel L. Blaine, 29, Washington, is charged with one count of assault/attempted assault of a law enforcement officer, a felony. A $50,000 cash-only bond was set in his case.
An off-duty deputy who was driving on Highway 50 about 7:40 p.m. saw the suspect driving erratically at the Highway BB intersection and began following him north. The deputy said the suspect’s vehicle crossed the centerline and ran off the road several times. At one point, he drove into a driveway, through a yard and back onto Route BB.
When the suspect stopped at the intersection of Highway A and Four Mile Road, the deputy ordered the driver out of the car. The officer then reached in to grab the keys and the suspect accelerated, dragging the officer about 20 feet onto Highway A before he could get free, the sheriff’s office said.
A short time later, Washington police arrested Blaine near the Highway 100/Route A intersection. Police said the man, who appeared highly intoxicated, refused a breath test and a search warrant was obtained for a blood draw.
