A passenger in a tractor-trailer died early Sunday when the truck crashed on Interstate 44 east of Sullivan.
The Missouri Highway Patrol said Gurpreet R. Kailey, 29, Little Falls, N.J., was ejected when the truck ran off the left side of eastbound I-44, west of Stanton, and overturned.
The driver, Virkram Shah, 33, Bronx, N.Y., swerved to avoid a vehicle driving the wrong way in the eastbound lanes, causing him to lose control, according to the preliminary patrol report.
Shah, who was wearing a safety belt, sustained apparent minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan for treatment.
Kailey was not wearing a safety belt. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Medical Examiner Mike Copeland.
The 5:40 a.m. crash happened at the 229.4-mile marker, the patrol said.
