A former Franklin County Highway Department employee told The Missourian on Friday that he has filed a grievance against the highway department administrator for wrongful termination.

Robert “Buck” Ahrens said he was a county employee for 20 years before Franklin County Highway Administrator Eva Gadcke fired him June 26.

He was an asphalt crew lead man, he said, adding that he wants his job back.

The Operating Engineers Local 148 union of St. Louis filed the grievance against the highway administrator on his behalf, he said.

Ahrens said he could not discuss the specifics behind his grievance or his termination.

The grievance was filed with the highway department July 2, he said.

He added that he feels he has support from highway workers.

Ahrens also said he could not comment on whether he feels the highway department is being run in a good manner.

It is fairly unusual for a member of the highway department to get fired, Ahrens said.

Gadcke could not be reached for comment.

The Missourian contacted County Counselor Mark Vincent, who said he could not comment on personnel matters.
