Deputies Arrest Man in Attempted Theft of Vehicle
A Jefferson County man is facing felony charges in Franklin County in connection with the attempted theft of a vehicle.
Jonathan S. Selter, 36, Grubville, is charged with tampering with a motor vehicle and stealing a motor vehicle, both felonies, and second-degree trespassing, an infraction, in the incident reported Wednesday, Jan. 30. His bond was set at $20,000.
Deputies responded that afternoon to a house in the 1000 block of Hendricks Road, off Highway HH, after a neighbor reported seeing two men trying to steal a vehicle.
The suspects left without the vehicle before deputies arrived, but the witness obtained a license number and took a photo of the suspect’s vehicle.
Investigators traced the license number to a Jefferson County man and deputies went to a home and spoke with a woman who confirmed the license plate was her son’s. The woman told deputies that she believes that someone else had the license plate, according to the sheriff’s office report.
Working with Jefferson County deputies, investigators went to Jo Mamma’s bar in Jefferson County where they located the suspect’s vehicle on the parking lot and learned that it had been stolen out of St. Louis County, the sheriff’s office said.
A Jefferson County deputy then located Selter hiding in the attic of a shed near the bar and he was taken to the Franklin County Jail where he later admitted to the crime, according to the report.
Selter also has a felony drug charge pending in Jefferson County circuit court, according to online court records.
