Franklin County Treasurer Debbie Aholt said residents may want to check a state and national website to see if they have unclaimed property or money due to them.
Property could include money from checks that have not been cashed, abandoned safety deposit box contents and military medals, Aholt said.
Those who wish to see if they have property due to them should visit www.showmemoney.com, which is operated by Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel.
The website states that Zweifel’s office holds more than $750 million in unclaimed assets.
“Each year financial institutions, businesses, government agencies and other organizations turn over millions of dollars and the contents of nearly 1,000 safe deposit boxes to Treasurer Zweifel’s office,” the website states. “One in 10 Missourians has unclaimed property and the average claim is about $300.”
Contents from abandoned safe deposit boxes are stored for at least a year. Once the vault gets full, an auction is held and the proceeds are recorded in the name of the safe deposit box owner.
However, military medals are held forever unless the owner or heir comes forward.
There are around 9,000 Franklin County names on a list of people who have property or money available, Aholt said. But she said some of those names could be repeated on the list.
As a whole, there is probably a substantial amount of money and property due to Franklin County residents, Aholt said.
If people want to see if they are due property in other states they can visit the national website at www.unclaimed.org.
