Franklin County has appointed a new medical director for the adult detention center.
The county commission Tuesday appointed Shaukat Thanawalla, a medical doctor.
Under the agreement, the county will pay Thanawalla a flat fee of $2,000 per month.
The contract expires Dec. 31, 2014.
Thanawalla replaces Dr. Kristin Weidle who served from November 2007 to June 30.
The medical director visits the detention center about once a week and is available for telephone consults.
The medical director also is in charge of the health care provided to inmates and approves the dispensing of medicine. He can also determine whether an inmate needs treatment outside of the jail.
