A Villa Ridge man is charged with unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of assault for allegedly pointing a rifle at a man early Sunday.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s office, Robert W. Moreland, 33, pointed a rifle at the victim who was staying with a female friend at her home in the 100 block of Arberview in Villa Ridge.

Moreland and the woman both live at the residence.

Deputies responded to the home at 3:50 a.m. following an argument between the Moreland and the victim after Moreland asked the man to leave and he refused.

The victim and woman heard gunshots from inside a bedroom, then the suspect allegedly pointed the rifle from down a hallway at the victim, authorities said.

The woman pushed the rifle into the air and the victim fled from the home, according to the sheriff's office.

Moreland allegedly shot two rounds but nobody was struck.

The suspect told deputies he shot the rifle out a bedroom window to scare off the victim. Moreland said he did not point the gun at anyone, authorities said.

Moreland is charged in Franklin County Associate Circuit Court with felony unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of third-degree assault. He is held on a $25,000 bond.
