Washington City Council members Monday night adopted an ordinance that vacates a 30-foot-wide alley in a block east of Highway 47

The alley extends north and south between Sixth and Eighth streets in a block bounded on the east by Madison Avenue and on the west by Highway 47.

Overton Properties LLC filed the application asking the city to vacate the alley. Michael Rau, member, noted in a letter to the city that the limited liability corporation owns all lots adjoining the alley.

Lots on the west side of the alley are zoned C-1, commercial, while property on the east side are zoned R-1B, single-family residential.

The board reviewed a previous request to vacate the alley in 2011 but no final action was taken.

Dan Boyce, city engineer, said that the city has spoken with all the abutting property owners under single ownership and utilities representatives and said no one has an issue with the vacation.

Property will be divided 50-50 between the adjoining lots, which are owned by Overton.

The Washington Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously June 10 to recommend that the city council approve the request.

The ordinance was approved following the public hearing. There was no discussion by city council members.
