Despite a large winter storm that encompassed the area with several inches of snow, sleet and freezing rain, firefighters with the Washington Volunteer Fire Department only had three calls Thursday, Feb. 21.

“I was surprised,” Deputy Chief Tim Frankenberg said. “I attribute that to more snow than ice and the great job (highway and street crews) did pretreating the roads.”

Frankenberg said the department only responded to one vehicle accident on south Highway 47, where a driver slid off the roadway and hit a bluff. There were no injuries in that accident, he said.

Crews also responded to a flue fire in the 1300 block of Jasper Lane, where Frankenberg said the snowy conditions actually helped a bit.

“There was snow on the roof so that may have helped some,” he said.

Frankenberg said the fire was quickly put out and caused minimal damage.

“We were only there about 30 minutes,” he said.

The other call that day turned out to be someone burning brush, Frankenberg said.

“It makes us pretty nervous when the weather gets bad,” he said. “We chained up all the vehicles and were ready to go. But it was quiet.”
