The deadline to register for the Washington School District’s summer school session is quickly approaching.

The first day of summer school for high school students will be Friday, May 31.

The summer session for middle school students begins Monday, June 3, and the first day for elementary students is Monday, June 3.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Judy Straatmann said the the majority of the classes are for remediation and credit recovery, with the exception of P.E., health, personal finance and drivers education.

At the elementary level, half-day summer school will be offered at two sites— Washington West and Marthasville — for all students in the district.

“Having it at just two schools is the most fiscally responsible option,” Straatmann said, adding that summer school is reimbursed by the state through the foundation formula.

“Students who typically attend South Point, Fifth Street, West and Marthasville, our four Title I designated schools, have the option of attending an afternoon summer school, as well, which is financed through federal funds allocated through the Title I program,” she noted.

“Attending summer school is a wonderful opportunity for those students who can benefit from having additional lessons and skill development so learning is not lost due to the length of summer break,” Straatmann said.

School officials said some courses may not be available due to lack of funding, enrollment or availability of staff, and all courses will be subject to size limits.

Students will be assigned to courses on a first come, first served basis according to receipt of application.

Registration forms can be dowloaded from the school district’s website.
