With five years of photography experience under her belt, Dana Volkman, owner of Photogenics on Location, has opened a studio in Downtown Washington.

The studio is located on Front Street in the building where IB Nuts & Fruit Too was located. The studio features stone walls and hardwood floors, which in themselves create backdrops for newborns, couples, families and seniors, Volkman said.

“There are definitely more possibilities with this building than just a normal office building,” she said, noting the building has a lot of natural light.

Besides more natural backdrops, Volkman has other backdrops and will continue to shoot at people’s homes or other desired locations.

“This is really just a fallback option for clients if they would prefer coming here instead of me coming to their home,” she said, “or in the winter months where there aren’t a lot of places to go.”

The studio also will serve as a meeting space for clients before going out on location and a place to meet with brides and grooms.

Volkman has a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Southeast Missouri State University. In college, she took several photography courses.

She began her career at The Missourian as a reporter. Part of her job entailed taking photos, which she always enjoyed.

Working with students through the newspaper, Volkman found a passion in teaching and in 2008 she began working at St. Francis Borgia Regional High School. She taught manual photography and continues to teach photography and journalism part time.

At SFBRHS, seniors began asking her to take their senior photos, and that’s where Photogenics on Location began.

“I never imagined having a business, but it just kept getting busier and busier,” she said.

Volkman noted that she will continue teaching part time.

With the studio, Volkman said she hopes to expand newborn photography. She also plans to be active in the Downtown area.

“I think it’s an awesome place not just for architecture and photography, but there are some amazing businesses down here that people really don’t think about,” she said. “I’m really excited to be a part of the history of Downtown Washington.”

Currently planning her own wedding, Volkman said she will hold off on a grand opening until later this spring or summer.

Photographs are taken by appointment only.
