Historical Society Will Maintain Kohmueller House

The Washington Historical Society officially has taken over maintenance of the historic Kohmueller house in the city park.

City council members voted unanimously Monday night to transfer the maintenance responsibilities from the now-defunct Washington Preservation Inc. to the historical society.

Walt Larson made the formal request to the council. Larson is a member of the historical society board and also was a member of Washington Preservation Inc.

He said for 20-plus years, Washington Preservation Inc. had maintained the 19th century farmstead, but a drop in membership led to dissolving the organization.

“Now, we’re asking to turn this over to the historical society,” Larson remarked.

The Washington Park Board last month recommended approving the change.

“Our intention is to care for the immediate surroundings of the home, maintain the home and provide educational opportunities for children and adults several times a year at this location,” William Schwab, historical society president, said in an Oct. 19, 2012, letter to the park board.

The city still will own the restored farmhouse and property. The society will take over routine maintenance, payment of electric bills and perform repairs as needed.

“The benefit to us is that we can take groups of school kids there for living history events that were done a number of years ago but haven’t been done in recent years,” Marc Houseman, historical society museum director, told park board members last year.

The Kohmueller house is located between the Four Rivers Area Family YMCA and Lions Lake.
