Organizers of the Wheels for Wheels Bike-A-Thon, set for this Saturday, May 11, are “praying for a beautiful day.”

The all-ages event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rotary Riverfront Trail in Downtown Washington.

Students organizing the event include Sophie Straatmann, St. Francis Borgia Grade School; Maggie Westhoff, St. John’s-Gildehaus; Justine Huellinghoff, Washington Middle School; Britney Harriman, Our Lady of Lourdes; and Ellie Scheer, New Haven R-II.

“The girls are getting very excited and anxious to see if they reached their goal,” said Julie Straatmann, Sophie Straatmann’s mom.

If there is spotty rain, the bike-a-thon will be held and the girls will still be at the riverfront to collect funds raised, Straatmann said. If there is lightning or thunder, the event will be canceled.

If the event is canceled, it will be posted on the Wheels for Wheels Bike-A-Thon page, at facebook.com/wheelsforwheelsbikeathon as well as on emissourian’s Facebook page, at facebook.com/emissourian.

This year’s goal is to raise the final amount needed to sponsor the centerpiece of the Jaycees All-Abilities Park, a climbing rock. Over the past two years, the girls have raised about $12,000 of the $15,000 needed to purchase the piece.

So far, about 85 riders have registered for the Bike-A-Thon, which is down a little from last year.

“I still feel pretty confident they’ll make their goal and finish off their commitment on the climbing rock,” Straatmann said.

Cyclists do not have to be registered to participate in the event. Riders can register Saturday morning.

Hot dogs and lemonade will be for sale at the event.

Participants who collect at least $20 will be eligible for attendance prizes, which will be drawn throughout the day.

The top fund-raiser will receive four Cardinals tickets in the Red Bird Club seating, an air-conditioned area under an overhang. The date of the tickets has not yet been determined.

Registration forms are available at the Downtown Washington post office, school offices, Wheels for Wheels Bike-A-Thon Facebook page, Revolution Cycles, Four Rivers Area Family YMCA and at allabilitiespark.org.

Forms can be dropped off at the post office in Downtown Washington or mailed to the Washington Jaycees, P.O. Box 6, Washington, MO 63090.
