Straatmann Named National Merit Finalist

Washington High School senior Taylor Straatmann has been named a finalist in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Straatmann is one of 15,000 finalists announced nationwide and will now have the opportunity to win one of 8,300 merit scholarships worth a combined $32 million.

“Taylor is an excellent student and a wonderful individual,” said WHS Principal Dr. Frank Wood. “She is well liked and respected by the students and faculty at WHS.”

Straatmann was recognized in September as a semifinalist and met all requirements to advance to finalist standing in the competition. Merit scholarship winners will be announced later this spring.

“Taylor is an intelligent and humble young lady, and we wish her the best in her future endeavors,” added Wood.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is a nonprofit organization that operates without government assistance.

NMSC was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 440 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.
